New & Teen Drivers
In the District of Columbia, you must be at least 16 years of age and pass a knowledge test to obtain a REAL ID Learner Permit or Limited Purpose Learner Permit. You must have held a learner permit for at least 6 months; certify that you have had at least 40 hours of driving experience; and pass a road skills test to obtain a Provisional License. You must be at least 17 years of age and have held a valid Provisional License for at least 6 months to obtain a Full License with Conditions. If you turn 21 while holding a learning permit, you may immediately schedule a road test to obtain a Full License. If you turn 21 while holding a Provisional License, you may immediately visit a DMV service center to obtain a Full License. If you are 21 years of age or older, you must pass a knowledge test and a road skills test to obtain a Full License.Resources for new & teen drivers

New-to-State Drivers
New District of Columbia residents with a valid, out-of-state driver license must convert it to a DC license within 30 days of establishing residence in DC. If your license has been expired for more than 90 days, you must pass a knowledge test and a road skills test to obtain a DC license.Resources for new-to-state drivers

In the District of Columbia, you must have a valid driver license and pass a knowledge test to obtain a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP). You must have held your CLP for at least 30 calendar days before you can schedule a CDL road skills test; you must pass the road skills test to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL).Resources for CDL
